British forces, who were led by General William Howe, were ordered to capture New York City. Luckily, George Washington, with his army, hurried over to New York to defend it. He came all the way from Boston! It was in New York when George Washington had hear that the congress declared the colonies as free and independent. This made African Americans think to themselves: Are we really free? Will the Declaration of Independence bring an end to slavery? There were African Americans fighting for both sides, Britain and America. By the end of the war, six states had made an effort to end slavery. On August 27, 1776, a battle between the British and Americans. The Americans started with high hopes, but that soon dwindle as the brawl proceeded. America lost 1,407 men, while Britain only 377. The future wasn't looking too bright for Americans, but this wasn't the end. America ended up winning while Britain ALMOST won the war.
